The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested a suspected member of an international human trafficking gang from Dhaka’s Jatrabari yesterday over the abduction of an expatriate Bangladeshi in South Africa.
CID’s special police superintendent Mirza Abdullahel Baqui identified the man as Akther Hossain, 29.
He said Bangladeshi expatriate Md Sahidullah was abducted from South Africa’s Sasolbarg on January 2. The abductors demanded Tk25 lakh as ransom from his relatives in Bangladesh. Mirza said the victim’s family had agree to pay Tk5 lakh. The kidnappers told them to give the money to their Bangladeshi agent Akther Hossain.
A case was lodged with Sonaimuri police in Noakhali on January 30. Later, a CID team arrested Akther from Jatrabari and recovered Tk3 lakh from his possession.
