Two suspected members of Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh have been killed in a "gunfight" with members of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police in city's Hazaribagh area on Wednesday night.
The deceased are Abdullah Al Noman alias Abdullah, 31, JMB's Dhaka north military wing commander, and Kamal alias Hiron, 25, second-in-command of JMB's central military wing.
In a press briefing, DB Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said the duo were involved in the attack on a Shia gathering in Hussaini Dalan, police constable killing in Ashulia and ASI killing in Gabtoli.
"They had taken training for about two months to execute their plannings of the attacks," Monirul said.
Three others were also arrested during the drive. They are Md Arman, Jahid Hasan alias Mushab, and Nur Hossain alias Negra Master.
The law enforcers also recovered two shooter guns, a knife, one motorcycle and two rounds of bullets.
Earlier, Masrukur Rahman Khaled, deputy commissioner (south zone) told the Dhaka Tribune that the two JMB men were injured in the "gunfight"and were immediately taken to DMCH.
However, DMCH sources confirmed that the two were brought dead to the hospital around 12:45am.
DB officials said they had arrested three other persons from the place. From the arrestees, the investigators came to know about the group who had been residing in Kamrangirchar area.
Later, DB team along with local policemen conducted a drive in Hazaribagh area. Sensing their presence, the criminals charge several bombs towards the team. A "gunfight" also took place near Shikder Medical College Hospital at Hazaribagh around 10:50pm.
On November 25 last year, the main accused of the cases, Al Bani who was also identified by investigators as one of the top leaders of the JMB fraction was killed in another "gunfight" in city's Gabtoli area.
