A 10-year-old domestic help, who tried to commit suicide by setting herself on fire, died yesterday morning at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The child had sustained 95% burn injuries and died around 8am, said DMCH Police Outpost in-charge Inspector Mozammel Haque.
Joba had set herself on fire around 9:30am on Friday following which her employer Mehedi Hasan Kallol brought her to the Burn unit of DMCH. She was allegedly being tortured by Kallol and his wife.
She came from Sonatola village of Bogra and was working as a domestic help in Kallol’s residence in Siddheshwari, Ramna since 2014.
When questioned, Kallol claimed that he did not know why Joba attempted suicide. However, hospital sources said that after she was brought to the hospital, she was heard screaming that she could no longer bear the torture of Kallol and his wife Polly, and wanted to end her life.
When asked if legal action will be taken against the employers, Ramna police station Sub-Inspector Sharif Alam said that they were waiting as the girl’s father Jahangir wanted to move forward with the allegations after Joba’s burial in her village.
