The three men, who were condemned to death for killing Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal’s central leader Kazi Aref, will be executed tonight.
Safayet Hossain Habib, Anwar Hossain and Rashedul Islam Jhantu will be sent to the gallows at Jessore Central Jail.
Md Anisur Rahman, superintendent of police in Jessore, said he had received a letter from the prison authorities in this regard.
“Copies of the letter have also been sent to the deputy commissioner and the civil surgeon. Security will be tightened ahead of the execution of the convicts,” he said.
Shahjahan Ahmed, senior superintendent of jail at Jessore Central Jail, said preparations had been taken to hang the convicts.
Five people, including Aref, were shot dead during a Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal rally in Kushtia on February 16, 1999. Aref was one of the key organisers of the 1971 Liberation War.
Sub-inspector Md Ishaq Ali of Daulatpur police station in Kushtia filed a case the following day.
After the end of the trial, a court in Kushtia pronounced the verdict on August 30, 2004.
In the verdict, 10 people were given the death penalty while 11 were sentenced to life imprisonment.
The High Court later acquitted one of the 10 death-row convicts but upheld the sentence of the remaining nine.
It also acquitted the 11 convicts who were awarded life sentence by the lower court. The Appellate Division also upheld the High Court verdict.
