A housewife was allegedly burnt to death for dowry yesterday at Daulatpur village in Nabiganj upazila of the district. The deceased was Gita Rani Das, wife of Liton Das.
Sources said locals found the burnt body of Gita at a house of one of her relatives in the morning and informed police.
Later, the police recovered the body and sent it to Nabiganj police station.
Gita’s elder brother Sanjit Das said: “Liton used to torture my sister for dowry after marriage. He also married another woman last year.”
“On the day, he had burnt alive my sister as she failed to bring the money demanded by him,” he also said.
On the other hand, Gita’s in-laws denied the allegation and termed the incident as a suicide case.
When contacted, Abdul Baten, officer-in-charge of the police station said: “Gita was mentally disordered. We are yet to sure whether the incident is murder or suicidal. Details will appear after the investigation.”
The police also detained three persons including Liton on suspicion of their involvement in the incident.
