No case filed over Navy mosque attacks

Update : 19 Dec 2015, 08:11 PM

Until last night, no case was filed over the bomb attacks on two mosques inside the Issa Khan Base of Bangladesh Navy in the port city on Friday afternoon.

The Navy authorities were conducting investigation into the incident, according to a press release issued by the Inter Service Public Relations (ISPR) Directorate on Friday evening.

When contacted, several senior officials of Chittagong police and RAB yesterday said that they had no idea about the two civil staff members detained from the spot after the blasts and the investigation process.

Meanwhile, visiting the house of one of the alleged attackers – Ramzan Ali – yesterday, it was found that his family members had left the house at Mukundapur village of Kaharole upazila in Dinajpur after the news of the attack spread in the area through media.

Five or six devotees received minor injuries as two hand bombs exploded after the Jumma prayers at the Issa Khan Mosque. A person was arrested from the spot with several unexploded explosives, the ISPR statement had said.

However, Chittagong police officials earlier told the Dhaka Tribune that the explosions took place during Jumma prayers at two mosques inside the base, and that the Navy authorities had detained two persons – Ramzan, a bat man, and Abdul Mannan, a ball keeper – with 11 unexploded grenades.

The police, however, could not confirm involvement of the detainees with any militant group.

Meanwhile, locals in Kaharole said that the family members of Ramzan had left the house on Friday afternoon. His father Ahsan Habib is the imam of a mosque at the adjacent village. Ramzan’s elder brother Rashedul Islam used to stay with his father.

Caretaker of the house Tariqul said that Habib had gone to his in-law’s house in nearby Birganj upazila on Friday afternoon along with Rashed.

Several neighbours wishing not to be named told the Dhaka Tribune that Ramzan had left the village around five years ago. They had different information about his whereabouts and studies.

On the other hand, RAB officials in Tangail said that they had not received any instruction for carrying out investigation against Mannan, who hails from Basail area of the district.
