A woman was beaten to death in her home by the followers of a councillor candidate in Gafargaon municipality area in Mymensingh on Wednesday.
The victim, Rabeya Khatun, was the mother of Azizul Islam, another councillor aspirant in Ward 3 of the municipality and general secretary of the Awami League in the ward.
Police have arrested two men in connection with the attack – Iqbal and Shohag, nephews of Anisul Haque, Azizul’s opponent in the municipal elections in Ward 3 and the president of the Awami League in the ward.
Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Rabeya’s son Azizul said a group of thugs led by Anisul attacked his house and beat his mother to death, injuring two of his brothers.
Gafargaon police station OC (investigation) Md Habibur Rahman confirmed Anisul’s involvement in the incident to the Dhaka Tribune.
Police recovered Rabeya’s body and sent it to morgue for an autopsy on Wednesday night.
“We will know whether Rabeya died from the beating or it was a natural death once we get the autopsy report,” the OC said.
