Shibir man beaten to death

Update : 23 Nov 2015, 07:06 PM

A member of Islami Chhatra Shibir died after he was beaten allegedly by Chhatra League activists in Jessore yesterday.

Habibullah, son of Dr Niamat Ali of Sharsha upazila’s Noihati village, was a third-year student of economics at Michael Madhusudan College.

Two other Chhatra Shibir members – Kamrul Hasan and Mamun - were also beaten at the same time and were sent to hospital.

Habibur Rahman Sohag, president of Chhatra Shibir’s Michael Madhusudan College unit, said eight to ten Chhatra League members picked up the three Shibir members from two mess accommodations and brought them to Shaheed Asad Hall before beating them there.

He said a protest would be staged over Habibullah’s killing, and claimed that police took no action when the three were beaten.

But Chhatra League has denied its involvement in the incident.

The organisation’s Jessore unit General Secretary Anwar Hossain Bipul said he had learned that Shibir members regularly meet at a student accommodation and police arrived there after locals had beaten them up.

Jessore Kotwali police station Officer-in-Charge Shikder Akkas Ali said: “I heard that a Shibir member died in a mob beating, which also injured two others. A bomb and Shibir posters were found at the scene.
