82 gold bars seized at Shah Amanat airport

The members of Directorate of Customs Intelligence and Investigation (CIID) have seized 82 pieces of gold bars worth of Tk four crore and held a person at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport.

The detainee was identified as Md Saiful Alam, 46, hailing from Raozan upazila in Chittagong, said CIID’s Assistant Director (AD) in Chittagong Pranay Chakma.

The AD said Saiful landed in Chittagong from Muscat through a flight WY-311 at 6pm Wednesday.

“Customs officials nabbed the person suspecting his movement after crossing green channel and seized 82 pieces of gold bars weighing 9.50 kilogrammes worth of Tk four crore from his possession which were concealed in two bags tied by a belt in his waist,” said AD Pranay Chakma.

Legal actions were taken against the person in this regard, he added.

According to the existing law a person can carry highest 200 grammes of gold from abroad paying necessary duty at the airport while the passenger can bring highest two kilogrammes of gold by giving early notice to the concerned authorities and paying necessary duty according to a circular issued by Bangladesh Bank.
