Tavella Murder: Quayum's brother Matin arrested at Benapole

Police have arrested MA Matin, brother of BNP leader MA Quayum in connection with Italian citizen Cesare Tavella murder from Benapole port.

Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) arrested him in the wee hours of Thursday, Muntasirul Islam deputy commissioner of DMP told the Dhaka Tribune.

“Based on information, a team of DB police conducted a drive at Benapole port area in Jessore around 11.45pm and arrested Matin while he was preparing to leave the country,” Muntasirul said. 

The DC said: “Matin is now being brought to Dhaka.”

Matin's name appeared in the confessional statement of Bhagne Russel, who was arrested along with three others from different areas in the capital.

Although, police claimed to have arrest Matin in the wee hours of Thursday but his family members alleged that he was picked up by some plain-clothes men from his Badda residence on October 22.

Nearly a month after the killing, on October 25, law enforcers produced four people before the media claiming that they had killed Tavella in exchange for money from a Big Brother. In primary inquiry, it was found that Quayum had planned and financed the killing.

Matin's brother MA Quayum, former ward commissioner and BNP leader, is believed to be the mastermind in Tavella killing. DB has so far arrested four people identified as Bhagina Rasel, Chakti Rasel, Shooter Rubel, and Tamzid alias Sharif for killing Tavella on road 90 in Gulshan 2 area in the capital on September 28.
