Update : 22 Oct 2015, 07:57 PM

At least one person was killed and five more were injured yesterday when two factions of the ruling party clashed in Natore’s Singra upazila.

Police detained 17 people following the clashes in Italy union. The deceased is 40-year-old Abdul Hannan, son of Abdul Karim of Tirail village.

Among the injured, Jilhas, 50, and Motaleb, 40, have been admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, while the rest are being treated at the local upazila health complex.

Locals said the clash took place between supporters of Awami League leader Ariful Islam, the incumbent union parishad chairman, and associates of AL activist Zinnat, who ran as a rebel candidate in the local election but lost out to the AL-backed Arif.

Nasir Uddin Mondol, officer-in-charge of Singra police station, said an earlier clash between the two factions on Tuesday had also ended in 10 supporters of Arif being injured.

During yesterday’s violence at around 8am, one of Zinnat’s supporters – Hannan – died, the OC said.

“I along with ASP (Sadar circle) Rafiqul Islam and Additional Superintendent of Police Munshi Shahabuddin have visited the spot. Police forces have already detained 17 men suspected to be involved in the clash. Preparations are being made to file a case in this regard,” the OC added.

ASP Shahabuddin told the Dhaka Tribune that additional police forces have been deployed, while the law and order situation was under police control.
