AL leader beaten to death in Rajshahi

A ward-level Awami League leader has been beaten to death by his cousin in the city's Lashmipur area.

The deceased is Md Aslam, Awami League organising secretary of ward no 11.

The police have detained his cousin, Jahid, immediately after the incident.

Rajpara police station OC Mahmudur Rahman said: “Aslam's cousin Jahid hit his head with a hammer during an altercation over family matters in Lashmipur area on Tuesday evening.

“Critically injured Aslam was rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead on Tuesday night.”

Rajshahi City Awami League General Secretary Dablu Sarker told the Dhaka Tribune: “Aslam's cousin Jahid took him to Lashmipur area form his house in the city's Hatem Khan area for discussing a family matter.

“At one stage of arguments, Jahid hit Aslam with a hammer, leaving him critically injured.”

Detained Jahid said: “I have a long-standing dispute with my nephew Pavel over land properties. I took Aslam with me for settling the matter at a family arbitration.

“At one stage of discussion, we [Jahid and Pavel] locked in a scuffle and I hit Aslam with the hammer when he tried to resist me.”
