Three doctors put on one-day remand

Update : 11 Oct 2015, 08:10 PM

A Dhaka court yesterday placed three doctors of Asian Cardiac General Hospital on one-day remand for alleged negligence in the death of three newborns at the hospital on October 2.

Metropolitan magistrate Muhammad Rashed Talukdar passed the order after Sub-inspector Krishno Kamol Saha of Mohammadpur police station, also the case investigation officer, produced them before the court seeking seven-day remand for interrogation.

Opposing the remand plea, defence counsel Kaji Md Najib Ullah Hiru filed bail petitions seeking bail for the accused.

The remanded are the hospital’s chief consultant of Child Unit Dr Shishir Ranjan Das, Medical Officer Dr Aftab Uddin, and Managing Director Dr Abdullah Al Ahad alias Shihab.

On October 6, police had filed a case against seven people, including the chairman, vice-chairman and managing director in connection with the deaths.

Sub-inspector Md Kamruzzman filed the case against them with Mohammadpur police station on the charge of death of the babies due to these authorities’ negligence.

Three of these accused were Abul Hossain, Lutfar Rahman and Abdullah Al Ahad – the chairman, vice-chairman and the managing director, respectively.

The other four accused were Dr Shishir Ranjan Das, Dr Aftab Uddin, Dr Afria and manager Layakat Ali. Of the seven accused, Abdullah, Shishir and Aftab are now in jail while the rest are on the run.

According to the case statement, on October 2, three children – three-day-old Kakuli, 19-day-old Shilpi, and Afrin, aged 2 months 2 days – had died at the four-storey Asian Cardiac General Hospital in Lalmatia of the capital due to the alleged negligence of hospital authorities. There was unrest the night before and after news of the children’s deaths spread.

On October 4, a Dhaka court allowed police to interrogate the three arrested doctors for two day-remand, rejecting their bail pleas, following a remand petition filed by SI Kamruzzman in connection with the incident. At first, police arrested them through a general dairy and later they were shown arrested in the case and sought remand.
