A robber has been killed in a “gunfight” between his cohorts and members of Rapid Action Battalion in the district's sadar upazila.
The deceased Asadul Islam, 35, was son of Abdur Rashid, of Megarpetol village under Bhuapur upazila of Tangail.
ASP Hasibul Alam, RAB 12 camp commander (Special Branch, said on a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive in China Dam area near Jamuna River around 3:45am while a gang of robbers was taking preparation for robbery.
Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the robbers opened fire to them and the law enforcers also retaliated with firing, triggering a gunfight.
After the gunfight, the RAB members arrested bullet-hit Asadul. However, the other robbers fled the scene immediately.
Later, Asadul was rushed to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Asadul was wanted in 15 cases, including murder and rape cases, said the RAB official.
The law enforcers recovered a foreign pistol, three rounds of bullets and some local weapons from the spot.
