Two killed in ‘turf wars’

A young man was reportedly killed in a gunfight between two terrorist groups at Panchbaria in Sadar upazila of Jessore district early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Ripon Hossain, 30, son of Habibur Rahman, a resident of Chhoto Anchra of Benapole port area.

Md Ilius Hossain, officer-in-charge of Jessore Kotowali police station, said on information that a gunfight ensued between two criminal groups, a team of police conducted a drive in the area

around 1am.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the members of both the groups fled away. Later, police detained Ripon with bullet injuries at the head.

The injured detainee was taken to Jessore Medical College Hospital where doctor declared him dead.

Police also recovered a one-shooter gun, one round of bullet and a bullet shell from the spot.

In Sirajganj, an alleged robber was killed in a “gunfight” with members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) at Jhaoil in Kamarkhanda upazila on Wednesday night.

The deceased was identified as Dulal Hossain, 42, son of Afzal Hossain, a resident of Sameshpur village in Belkuchi upazila.

Assistant superintendent of police Hasibul Alom, commander of Sirajganj Rab-12, said on secret information that a gang of robbers was preparing for committing robbery, a team of the elite force conducted drive in the area around 9:30pm.

Sensing the presence of the Rab members, the robbers opened fire at them prompting a retaliation that triggered a gunfight.

At one point, Dulal was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.

Dulal was accused in nine cases, including for robbery, filed with different police stations, said officer-in-charge of Sadar police station Helal Uddin.
