Members of the Customs Intelligence seized huge amount of Indian currency notes from a container at Chittagong Port on Sunday night and detained five persons in this connection today.

The detainees included the Clearing and Forwarding (A&F) agent of the consignment and younger brother of the consignor, said Dr Moeenul Khan, Director General of the Directorate of Customs Intelligence.

Customs sources said one Mohammad Shahiduzzaman, who hails from Hathajari upazila of the district and lives in Dubai, sent the container.

Earlier, the Customs Intelligence found the Indian currency notes in a container that arrived in a Monrovia flag carrier ship "MV Prosper" which came from the UAE's Fujairah port Sunday night.

The currency notes were found in four boxes of the container which bore the mark of goods for personal use.

National Board of Revenue chief Mohammad Najibur Rahman and Customs Intelligence chief Moeenul Khan came to Chittagong Sunday night after the haul.

"The currencies are now being counted in presence of Port and Customs Intelligence, National Board of Revenue (NBR) and other concerned officials", Dr Moeenul said.
