Police officer closed for collecting ransom

An officer of Barisal Kotwali police station has been closed for collecting ransom by making hostage a Jubo League leader.

After the allegation against Assistant Sub Inspector Habibur Rahman of Barisal Kotwali police station, he was closed at Barisal Police Lines on Monday night.

Victim Azam Khan, convener of Muladi upazila Jubo League, alleged that he came to appear before the court at Barisal on September 2 in a case over land property ownership dispute.

After completing work when they came out of court compound at 11:50am, ASI Habib and SI Samiran and their associates abducted Azam and brought to Miar Hotel, a residential boarding in the area, said the victim.

“The police officials, accusing me as an arms trader, searched my body and took away Tk18,000.”

Then torturing and threatening forcibly they bound me to send more Tk51,000 to mobibile numbers 01711-388835 and 1791-105070 and then released me at 3:30pm, alleged victim Azam Khan.

The matter was informed to Asaduzzaman, assistant commissioner of the police station on September 6 and he advised me to submit a written complains, Azam added.

After submitting written allegation on September 7, ASI Habib returned Tk60,000 at Kotwali police station to me, said Nannu Khan, one of the relatives of Azam Khan, who received the returned amount.

Asaduzzaman, ACP of BMP, said: “After receiving allegation, I asked the victim to submit written allegation and informed Golam Rouf Khan, deputy commissioner of BMP about the matter.”

ACP Asaduzzaman confirmed that, meanwhile, Tk60,000 have already been returned by ASI Habib to Azam Khan.

When contacted, ASI Habib was not available for comment. However, SI Samiron denying his involvement said ASI Habib may be involved with the matter.

Golam Rouf, deputy commissioner of BMP, said after receiving the allegation on Monday night ASI Habib was ordered to be closed at Barisal police line immediately.
