An architecture student of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology in Sylhet was found dead in his room on Thursday night.
The dead Shahriar Majumder was a student of 2008-2009 session and a Gonojagoron Moncho activist hailing from Chittagong.
Classmates and police said Shahriar lived in a mess adjacent to the university in Surma residential area.
Police said his door was found locked from the inside when his classmates went to call him around 8pm. When Shahriar did not respond, they tried to peep through the ventilator and found that his body was hanging from a belt, police added.
Later, they broke the door to get inside and informed the police.
Kotwali police recovered his body and sent it to Osmani Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
When asked about the incident, the SUST Proctor Professor Kamruzzaman Chowdhury said the CID and police investigation teams have already been called to the scene to investigate the death.
