12 sued over medical equipment purchase fraud

The Anti-Corruption Commission has filed two cases against 12 people on charges of pocketing Tk13.70 crore in the name of purchasing medical equipment for Satkhira Medical College Hospital and Satkhira Sadar Hospital.  

The accused are former principal and director of Satkhira Medical College Hospital Dr SZ Atiq, Satkhira Sadar Hospital senior consultants Ruhul Quddus and AKM Jahangir Alam, junior consultants Narayan Prasad Sanyal and Rahima Khatun, Resident Medical Officer Maruf Hasan, Assistant Repairer of a Dhaka-based medical equipment maintenance workshop Habibur Rahman, Social Services Officer of Satkhira Social Services Department Md Wahiduzzaman, Senior Health Education Officer of Satkhira Civil Surgeon office AKM Sohrab Hasan, Officer of Kushtia Public Works Sub-Division 1 Harunur Rashid, former deputy secretary of the Health Ministry Abdul Malek and Proprietor of Mercantile Trade International in Dhaka’s Segunbagicha Abdus Sattar.

Satkhira Sadar police recorded the cases yesterday after a document signed by ACC Deputy Director Amirul Islam reached them.  

The 12 men were charged with working collusively to draw up a list of equipment to be bought for Satkhira Medical College Hospital at inflated price, thus bilking Tk7.51 crore, said Emdadul Haque Sheikh, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar police station.
