Kamrul among 13 charged for Rajon murder

Update : 16 Aug 2015, 08:22 PM

Police yesterday filed a charge sheet in the murder of teenager Rajon against 13 persons, mentioning Kamrul Islam as the prime accused, to the Sylhet Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Kamrul was detained by Bangladeshis in Saudi Arabia and handed over to the police. Two of his brothers – Shamim and Pavel – are on the run. Ten others are now in police custody. Eight of them have given confessional statements in the case.

The names of detained Islamil Ali Abullus and Lipi Begum were dropped as their involvement in the July 8 killing could not be proved, Investigation Officer Suranjit Talukder said.

As many as 38 people have been made witness in the case.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune about submission of the charges.

On July 8, Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, 13, was beaten to death in Sylhet’s Kumargaon by some men who falsely accused him of stealing a rickshaw van. One of the killers recorded the incident on mobile phone and it was uploaded on Facebook.

The video soon spread on social media platforms, triggering massive outrage among the public. The 28-minute video, recorded on a mobile phone camera, shows the victim tied to a pole in front of a workshop in the still-closed Sultan Ali Market, beside the Dhaka-Sunamganj road.

In the video, it seemed there were five to six men who took part in the barbaric torture.

Rajon studied up to class IV and later started selling vegetables. His father Sheikh Azizur Rahman is a car driver.

After the murder, police filed a case. Rajon’s father later filed a complaint.

The 10 other accused are Muhith Alam, Ali Haider alias Ali, Dulal, Moyna Mia alias Boro Moyna, Nur Mia, Ayaz Ullah, Firoz Ali, Azmat Ullah, Taj Uddin Badal and Ruhul Amin. They are now in jail. Muhith was held while dumping Rajon’s body on the day of the murder.

It was alleged that Jalalabad police had helped Kamrul to leave the country in exchange for bribes. The government is trying to bring him back from Saudi Arabia.

The authorities so far suspended Jalalabad OC (investigation) Alamgir Hossain, and sub-inspectors Aminul Islam and Zakir Hossain.
