A top organiser of banned Islamic outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir in Chittagong city has been arrested from Chawakbazar area early Monday.
Arrestee Sohan Yasin Mohammed Iqbal, 29, is also a former student of Chittagong University.
Chawakbazar police station OC Aziz Ahmed said: "Sohan has been organising the activists of Hizb ut-Tahrir at Chittagong University and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology."
A computer, some books and documents were also seized from his possession during the drive, the OC said.
He said acting on a tip-off police arrested Sohan from his flat at Deb Pahar area of Chawakbazar where he used to live with his family.
OC Aziz AHmed added: "Completing MBA degree in 2009, the Hizb ut-Tahrir leader had joined at one Telecom company but later left the job while he had been coordinating the banned outfit’s workers at CU and Cuet units through Facebook, email and other internet facilities."
During primary interrogation the Hizb ut-Tahrir leader told police that around 30 to 40 activists are working at CU and Cuet in a bid to establish the Khelafat state, the OC said.
Police, however, had interrogated Sohan about the recent blogger murder but he refuted the organisation's link with the murder.
