A pregnant woman and the child she was carrying have survived bullet injuries received after being shot at on Friday, allegedly by members of the Chhatra League.
The mother, Nazma Khatun, 30, of Dolaipar was taken to Magura Sadar Hospital the night of the incident on July 24.
Her infant daughter was born three months prematurely after doctors operated her out of the womb, Nazma’s sister-in-law, Sheuli Begum, said.
The neonate was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on Sunday morning, where doctors are monitoring her condition. The mother is in Magura, in stable condition.
According to Sheuli, the child had sustained two bullet wounds while in the womb.
Sheuli said on the day of the incident, men belonging to the local Chhatra League demanded extortion money from one Kamrul Bhuiyan, but he refused to pay them.
Angered at his refusal to pay the money, the Chhatra League men shot at him, injuring Nazma, her unborn child and Kamrul’s associate, Miraz, 35 in the process.
