College student stabbed over football match dies, one arrested

A college student who was stabbed to death centring a dispute over football match succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Barisal yesterday.

The victim was identified as Ujjal Kharati, 18, son of Uttam Kumar Kharati from Lakshmipasha village under Kabai union of Bakerganj upazila.

He was also an HSC examinee of Kabai Islamia Degree College.

Uttam Kumar said his son engaged in a scuffle with Saiful Sardar Munna, son of Bashir Sardar of the same area, over playing football at a local school ground on Thursday afternoon.

Following the tussle when Ujjal went to the market to buy medicine in the evening, Munna and his associates stabbed him from back and fled the spot.

Ujjal was rushed to Bakerganj Upazila Health Complex in critical condition and then to Barisal SBMCH on Thursday night, said Rafikul Islam Sabuj, chairman of Kabai union parishad.

Abul Kalam, SBMCH official said Ujjal succumbed to his injuries at 5am on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Uttam Kharati lodged a murder case in this connection against Munna and his five associates on Saturday afternoon.

Soon after, police visited the spot and arrested one of the accused named Nasir, said Bakerganj police station Officer in-Charge Anwar Hossain. The body of the victim was kept at SBMCH for autopsy, he added.
