The Detective Branch (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested a man in the city’s Pahartali area for uploading Photoshopped photos of a college student to Facebook.

The arrested, Shuvo Das, 30, along with his friend Rajib Aich, 31, also demanded Tk500,000 from the victim’s father when he asked them to remove the photos from the online social platform, the detectives said.

The detectives arrested Shuvo at Chittagong Eye Infirmary, where he was employed as a cleaner, following a tip-off, said DB Sub-Inspector Santosh Kumar Chakma. Rajib is on the run.

“Shuvo is currently being held at the DB office, and filing of a case in this regard is being processed,” he said.

During initial interrogation, Shuvo confessed to having committed the crime and said he would apologise to the victim and her father, the sub-inspector added.

The harassed the girl is a relative of Rajib’s and the accused duo often visited her residence in the city’s Pannapara area, Santosh told the Dhaka Tribune.

Quoting the victim’s father, the DB official said Shuvo started uploading the victims photos to his Facebook account, some of which were Photoshopped to make them embarrassing, about a month ago.

When the victim’s father requested him to remove the pictures from Facebook, Shuvo and Rajib demanded the money from the family, and threatened to further humiliate the girl if they did not receive the money.

Following the extortion demand, the victim’s father filed a general diary with Pahartali Police Station in this regard on July 5, and a complaint with the Detective Branch on July 7.
