Police puzzled over Mirpur girl murder

Update : 11 Jul 2015, 08:06 PM

Investigators are struggling to solve the murder of a teenager at Mirpur since her father has two other wives while the killers left no clue on the spot that could help them to make a breakthrough in the case.

HSC second year student Amena Khatun Reshma was murdered in the family flat on Thursday morning when her father Alamgir Miah and mother Mariam Begum were out.

The arrestees are Reshma’s step brother Robin, 22, and security guard of the building Milon, 42. The duo also did not give any significant information, police say.

Alamgir lived with his second wife Mariam and their daughter on the first floor of a five-storey building at Rainkhola of Mirpur sector 2.

The flat is owned by Mariam and the ownership was supposed to be transferred in Reshma’s name. “My daughter was killed for this flat,” the mother alleged.

Mariam also claimed that Robin used to visit their flat often and had threatened them with dire consequences on several occasions.

She also suspect that Alamgir’s third wife Khodeza Begum, who lives in Jhalakathi, could be behind the murder too.

The only eyewitness, who saw Reshma screaming for help at the balcony and later a woman dragging her into the room with a red scarf, is a child from a neighbouring building.

Sub-Inspector Toufiqul Arefin of Mirpur model police station, also investigation officer of the case, said the building did not have any CCTV cameras and that the arrestees had not made any confessional statement.

“Primarily, we thought that the security guard might know something about the murder. But he did not say anything about it. Robin too denied having any involvement in the killing,” the IO said.

Resham’s father is a class IV employee at Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC). His first wife stays at the BCIC Staff Quarters at Mirpur with her sons Robin and Rakib, 20.

Alamgir has two minor children with her third wife Khodeza while Mariam has two daughters from her first marriage.

OC Md Salahuddin said in the case, Mariam did not mention anyone as accused. But she alleged that Khodeza and Robin often threatened them with death.

Mariam said Khodeza threatened to kill her and Reshma when they had gone to Jhalakathi to bring her husband back.

SI Arefin said Khodeza might have also murdered Reshma with the help of professional killers.
