A suspected ringleader of robbers’ gang succumbed to his bullet injuries early yesterday after being shot during a gunfight with police in Bashbaria area of Sitakunda upazila in Chittagong.
Besides, seven policemen of Sitakunda police station were injured during the gun battle.
The deceased was identified as Nazim Uddin, 35, son of Ishak Chowdhury, a resident of Kottabazar of Uttar Bashbaria area of Siakunda upazila, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iftekhar Hasan of Sitakunda police station.
Police arrested Nazim’s associate Md Didar, 25, and recovered a pistol, a Light Gun (LG) and 10 rounds of bullets from the scene.
The seven injured policemen, Sub-Inspectors Mizanur Rahaman, Rafiqul Islam Jaman, Dulal Hossen, Nayek Mozzamel Hossen, Constables Yasin, Kamrul and Shahdat, received primary treatment from Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex, said the OC.
Acting on a tip off, a team of police raided the area around 9pm on Monday night, he said.
Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on law enforcers prompting police to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
After the gunfight, police arrested bullet-hit Nazim and his cohort Didar along with arms and ammunition from the spot and sent Nazim to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. He later died in the early hours of the day.
