Six held with 26 gold bars

Police in a drive arrested six persons along with 26 gold bars worth about Tk1 crore from Forest Gate area in the port city’s Sholoshohar yesterday noon. The arrestees are Safiul Azam, 24, Nejam Uddin, 26, Md Sahajahan, 21, Md Bahdur, 30, Kaisar Bin Yusuf, 24 and Md Hasan, 32, confirm police sources.

Being tipped-off, police intercepted a private car and a CNG-run autorickshaw carrying two and four people respectively from Ruby Gate area and detained the six, said Chittagong Metropolitan Police (North Zone) Deputy Commissioner (DC) Paritosh Gosh.

Later police recovered eight gold bars from the authorickshaw while 18 bars from the car. The weight of the bars is about 3kg.

Sources said Safiul landed in Chittagong airport from Dubai in the morning, who tactfully hid 18 gold bars in his waist belt.

During primary questioning, the six, from two different gangs,  confessed they collected the gold bars from Hill View Residential area.

Earlier on June 23, Baizid police arrested two people along with 120 gold bars from Ruby Gate area and police believed the gold haul was delivered from Hill View area as well.

Police have seized the private car and investigating into the incidents to find the link between them, DC Paritosh continued.
