DU student held for Hizb ut-Tahrir link

Shahbagh police arrested an alleged activist of banned militant outfit Hizb ut-Tahrir from the Dhaka University campus yesterday.

The arrestee is Abdul Matin, a masters student of the Education and Research Institute (IER). He was later suspended from the DU.

DU proctorial body members identified the student around 2pm at Arts Faculty when he attempted to give leaflets and jihadi books to a teacher, acting proctor Amzad Ali said. Later, Matin was handed over to the police.

The authorities also found jihadi literature and CDs after searching his room.

Prof Amzad said they would take stern action against Matin after investigation.

International militant group Hizb ut-Tahrir that aims at establishing Caliphate was banned in the country on October 22, 2009 for posing threat to public safety. It is also banned in a number of countries.
