A listed suspect in the murder of Ekramul Haque Ekram was arrested in Feni Sadar upazila last night, police told the Dhaka Tribune.
Following a tip-off, a team of Rapid Action Battalion 7 arrested Abdul Kader, one of the accused in the murder case, in a Sadar road around 10pm, said Assistant Superintendent of Police Shaheda Sultana of RAB 7.
The arrested, from Feni’s Fulgazi upazila, has committed murders before, she said.
Ekram, the ruling Awami League-backed incumbent chairman of Fulgazi upazila, was killed in broad daylight on May 20 last year by a group of assailants – some of who are close aides of local Awami League lawmaker Nizam Hazari. They shot Ekram and later set his vehicle on fire.
Police filed the charge sheet of the case on August 28 last year accusing 56 people for the murder, naming BNP leader Mahtabuddin Ahmed Chowdhury Minar, who had contested the upazila elections against Ekram, as the prime accused.
Though his name was brought up in connection with the killing, the investigators never interrogated Nizam Hazari before submitting the charge sheets.
