Unidentified girl’s body gets 2 claimers 3 days later

Update : 29 Jun 2015, 08:15 PM

The body of a 19-year-old girl remained unidentified for three days before the emergence of two different persons, who both claimed that the deceased was their sibling.

One of the two persons – Anisur Rahman of Majhail village in Magura – on Sunday afternoon claimed that the deceased was his sister named Juena Khatun. He also claimed that the girl was the wife of Saidur Rahman, who hails from Gazipur.

The body of the girl was recovered from Uttara sector 4 in the capital on June 25.

Anisur on Sunday also hired an ambulance and took the body out of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

But confusion arose when a woman named Helena came to Uttara police station (east) hours later and claimed that it was her sister’s body.

Hearing Helena’s claim, police immediately took action and stopped the ambulance in Dhamrai around 8pm. The ambulance was then taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 3am yesterday.

Anisur refused to talk to the Dhaka Tribune about Helena’s claim, saying that he would speak to the media only after confirming that it was his sister’s corpse. “What is the point of talking to reporters if it is found that she is not my sister?” He also said he was very confident about the identity of the body.

But the other claimer, Helena, spoke with the same confidence and said she was hundred percent sure about the identity of the recovered body. “I am ready to face any test to prove that my claim is right.”

She said she met her sister just the day before the body was recovered, and could never imagine she would be found dead.

Md Jamal Hossain, sub-inspector of the police station, said police were in a quandary about the identity of the girl.
