A Dhaka court yesterday fixed tomorrow to hear a petition filed by the Detective Branch (DB) to take Awami League lawmaker Pinu Khan’s son Bakhtiar Alam Rony on seven-day fresh remand.
Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Haque fixed the date after DB Inspector Dipok Kumar Das, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Rony before the court and pleaded for the remand.
Earlier on Wednesday, another Dhaka court placed Rony on a four-day remand; he had been placed on another four-day remand on June 1 after he was arrested for killing a rickshaw puller named Abdul Hakim and an autorickshaw driver named Yakub on April 13.
The deceased were initially injured when Rony opened fire indiscriminately from his car near Janakantha Bhaban at New Iskaton in the capital.
Hakim succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) on April 15, and Yakub – employed by the Daily Janakantha – died on April 23.
Hakim’s mother Monowara Begum filed a murder case with Ramna police station against unidentified criminals on April 15.
Rony’s friends Kamal Mahmud, Tiger Kamal and Jahangir who were with Rony inside the car at the time of the incident, gave judicial statements before the court on June 17 and 18.
According to their statements, Rony along with the three were going to Dhanmondi from Moghbazar by a black Prado SUV used by Rony’s mother MP Pinu Khan.
There was a traffic congestion on the street on the eve of Pohela Boishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year. As Rony’s vehicle got stuck in a tailback at New Iskaton, an outraged Rony, who was in a drunken state, shot five times towards people.
Rony and the car driver Imran Fakir were arrested on May 31 for their link with the killings. Imran gave confessional statement before court on June 1.
Meanwhile, the CID ballistic report confirmed that the bullets which killed the two victims were fired from Rony’s gun.
