A Bangladesh Chhatra League college unit president was arrested for harassing a fellow female student who later committed suicide as a result.
The arrested Jahid Mahmud, 28, president of Government Bangla College unit BCL, was taken into custody from near the Kafrul police station around midnight on Friday when he went there to intimidate the victim’s family from filing a case, said the police.
The victim Fatematuz Zohura Bristy, 23, a third-year student of political science of the college, also BCL Kafrul unit female student affairs secretary, hung herself from the ceiling at home in East Kazipara on June 13.
Bristy’s uncle Jewel Rana said: “After finding her in that condition, family members rushed her to Care Hospital of the capital’s College Gate area. She later died while undergoing treatment on June 19.”
The family members alleged that Jahid was in an intimate relationship with Bristy for many days as he promised to marry her. Eventually she became pregnant and Jahid forced her to perform abortion.
Bristy filed a general dairy (GD) against Jahid on May 2, but the BCL leader forced her to withdraw the GD. Bristy had also been proposing him to marry her, which Jahid kept ignoring. Frustrated, Bristy opted for suicide on June 13.
When Bristy’s father Tofazzal Hossain filed a case in this connection with Kafrul police station on Friday night, Jahid went there to force him from doing so, said Sub-Inspector Khandakar Moniruzzaman, also investigation officer of the case.
At one stage, police arrested him from beside the police station and sent him to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, he added.
