An alleged ringleader of a robber gang has been killed and four police personnel sustained injuries during a 'gunfight' with police in Rautara area under Sadar upazila on Monday.
The deceased is identified as Alfu Biswash, ringleader of 'Alfu Bahini'.
Assistant Police Super Sudarshan Kumar Roy said, on a tip-off, a joint team of detectives and law enforcers conducted a drive around 4am when the robbers are taking preparation for robbery.
As the team reached the spot, the gang opened fire on them forcing the team to fire back that triggered a gunfight.
"Alfu was caught in the line of fire," Sudarshan Kumar said.
He was rushed to Sadar hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Four police men were also injured during the gunfight.
A shooter-gun, two bullets and a machete were recovered from the spot.
