An alleged ringleader of a gang of robbers was killed during a gunfight with law enforcers at Lakshmipur village in Sadar upazila early yesterday.
The deceased is Salim Sheikh, 38.
Sources said, on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area at around 3:30am when a gang of robbers was preparing to commit a robbery.
As the team reached the spot, the group of robbers opened fire on police forcing the law enforcers to fire back, which triggered a gunfight.
At one stage, Salim was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot. But his associates managed to flee the scene.
Police recovered one shutter gun, one foreign made pistol and one round of bullets from the spot.
