Suspected robber killed in gunfight in Cox’s Bazar

An alleged robber was killed in a gunfight with police at Chakaria upazila in the district yesterday.

The deceased is Ali Ajgar, 30, son of Nurul Amin of the Dumkhali area.

Probhash Chandra Dhar, officer-in-charge of Chakaria police station said, on a tip-off, the police conducted a drive in the Khutkhali area of the upazila while a gang of robbers were preparing to commit a robbery in the area.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate which triggered a gun battle, he said.

Ajgar was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot.

Three policemen were also injured during the gunfight.  Police arrested an injured robber named Mohammad Shekha.

The law enforcers also recovered two firearms and 13 bullets from the spot.

The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue.
