Man shot dead in Chittagong, cop bullet-hit

A man was shot dead and a police official sustained bullet-injury in his head in clash between two local groups in Chittagong city’s Akbar Shah area on Monday night over a land dispute.

The deceased was identified as Abul Kalam, 35, hailing from Noakhali, said Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Pankaj Barua of Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) Police Outpost.

The bullet-hit Sub-Inspector (SI) Mostafizur Rahaman of Akbar Shah police station was admitted at CMCH, said ASI Pankaj.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) (West) Arefin Juel of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) told Dhaka Tribune that two groups of local locked into a fierce clash at Faruk Chowhdury Field area of Akbar Shah at around 7:00pm over a land dispute.

The two groups equipped with firearms and lethal weapons attacked each other while police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, said the ADC.

At one point the groups locked into clash leaving Kalam and SI Mustafiz bullet-hit, ADC Juel said.

In critical condition the two were rushed to the CMCH where the on duty doctors declared Kalam dead, said ASI Pankaj of CMCH.

ADC Arefin Juel also said additional police were deployed at the spot while legal action would be taken against the persons involved in the incident.
