One to die, 5 get life term for murder

A court in the district yesterday sentenced a man to death and five others to life term imprisonment for killing a man in 2001.

The condemned convict was identified as Jahangir Alam while the lifers were Foyez Ahmed, Shamimuzzaman Babu, Emdadul Haque, Nazmul

Hossain and Rafiqul Islam of Elahabad village in Debidwar upazila.

The court filed the lifers Tk50,000 each, in default, they will have to suffer six months more rigorous imprisonment.

According to prosecution, Anwar Hossain, a resident of Elahabad village, was killed by the convicts over land-related dispute in the village on August 10, 2001.

Shahadat Hossain, son of Anwar, filed a case with Debidwar police station on the following day accusing 12 people, including Jahangir.

Police submitted charge sheet against 12 people on April, 30, 2002.

After examining the records and 16 witnesses, judge of additional sessions judge 4th court Chemon Ara Chowdhury handed down the verdict.
