Ex-Khilgaon OC jailed

Update : 31 May 2015, 07:25 PM

Former officer-in-charge of Khilgaon police Helal Uddin surrendered before a Dhaka court yesterday, two weeks after he was convicted for torturing Dhaka University student Abdul Kadar in custody in 2011.

Dhaka’s Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Alamgir Kabir Raj sent him to jail rejecting his conditional bail filed against the judgement.

The same court on May 17 sentenced him to three years in prison and fined Tk10,000.

Khilgaon police detained Kadar around 1:30am on July 16, 2011 at Segunbagicha, tortured him there and later at the police station. Then OC Helal tortured Kadar again and hit his leg with a machete to force a confession about his involvement in various crimes he had never committed.

After arresting Kadar, police filed three separate cases against him – one for robbery, another for possession of an illegal firearm while shown arrested in another false case of carjacking.

Following media outcry, police probed the incident in line with a High Court order. Kader was freed on bail on August 3 – some 18 days of his detention.

Helal and two other officials of the police station were suspended over the incident.

Kadar filed the case on January 23, 2012 with Khilgaon police. Now a teacher at a Laxmipur Government College, Kadar was acquitted of all charges in 2012.
