A suspected drug peddler was claimed to have died in a gun battle with RAB in the capital’s Motijheel early yesterday.
RAB said Altaf Hossain Sagor, 38, was involved in illegal drug trade but his neighbours said they had never heard of any such allegation against him.
Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue officials said Sagor’s body bore marks of at least 15 shots and he was shot at point-blank range.
RAB 3 Operation Officer ASP Saiful Islam said three to four persons fired at a RAB team during a raid at Garage Patti area shortly after Wednesday midnight, prompting the gunfight.
“One of the men sustained bullet injuries and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 1:45am,” said Mozammel Haque, in-charge of the hospital’s police outpost.
RAB officials said 1,204 bottles of phensidyl, two firearms and four rounds of ammunition were recovered from the scene and a private car was also seized from there.
ASP Saiful said Sagor was named in 14-15 cases filed with different police stations.
Sagor’s stepbrother, Rafiqul Islam, said he came to know about his brother’s death after watching the news on television.
