RAB: Some perps of Garo woman rape identified

Update : 26 May 2015, 04:24 PM

Investigators have identified more than one perpetrator involved in the recent rape of an indigenous woman inside a moving microbus in Dhaka.

Video footages from CCTV cameras were analysed, while the victim's statement also helped in making the identification, RAB officials said.

Without disclosing exactly how many rapists have been identified, RAB legal and media wing Assistant Director Major Maksudul Alam said “some” of the offenders have been identified.

He also refused to disclose the identities of the culprits for the sake of the ongoing investigation.

However, a senior RAB official, on condition of anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune the investigation officer has identified two perpetrators so far.

Major Maksudul also claimed that different media outlets have been publishing fabricated news surrounding the incident. This claim was also raised by DB chief Monirul Islam on Monday.

Monirul, the joint commissioner of the Detective Branch, said efforts were on to identify the culprits by analysing surveillance footage from roadside CCTV cameras, as well as CCTV footage from inside Jamuna Future Park – the shopping mall where the victim worked at.

He added that the police had yet to trace the microbus that was used in the crime.

Inspector (investigation) Sazzad Hossain of Bhatara police earlier told the Dhaka Tribune: “We have collected footage from the CCTV cameras installed at different establishments on the route followed by the microbus [during the incident].”

Last Thursday, a Garo woman was forced into a microbus at gunpoint from the Kuril Bishwa Road bus stand area, before being raped by five youths inside the vehicle. Later, a case was filed with Bhatara police station in this regard.
