Police: Rape in microbus was premeditated

Update : 25 May 2015, 08:48 PM

The recent rape of an indigenous woman inside a running microbus had been a premeditated act of crime by the perpetrators, police said yesterday.

The analysis of video footage and the statement of the victim suggested that the rapists had targeted the woman and planned the crime, said Monirul Islam, joint commissioner of the Detective Branch of police.

Efforts were on to identify the culprits by analysing surveillance footage from roadside CCTV cameras, as well as CCTV footage from inside Jamuna Future Park – the shopping mall where the victim worked at.

However, there was still no trace of the microbus used in the crime as it did not have any valid numberplate, said Monirul, also the spokesperson of the DMP.

“We have completed all preliminary procedures of investigation into the rape case; and now the police officials are searching for the culprits,” he added.

After the incident on Thursday, the woman said she had earlier seen one of her rapists at the shop she worked at, where he recently accompanied two foreign nationals.

Inspector (investigation) Sazzad Hossain of Bhatara police said: “We have also collected footage from the CCTV cameras installed at different establishments on the route followed by the microbus [during the incident].”
