Ruling party leader held for vandalising GCC Bhaban

The police have arrested a ruling party leader in connection with a case filed for vandalising Gazipur City Corporation Bhaban.

The arrestee, Shahjahan Mia Saju, Joint Convenor of Gazipur district ‍unit Swechchhasebak League, a front organisation of Awami League, allegedly vandalised the city corporation building following a clash between two groups of contractors.

Locals said followers of Shahjahan and Kamruzzaman Repon locked horns over a previous enmity on Wednesday afternoon and vandalised the city corporation building.

At least 10 people, including three councillors, sustained injuries during the clash over an internal conflict between the two ruling party leaders, and also local contractors.

On Wednesday evening, Assistant Secretary of the GCC Mohammed Nezamul Haque filed a case with Joydebpur police station against Shahjahan Mia, Gazipur district unit General Secretary of Bangabandhu Sanskritik Jote Kamruzzaman Repon, his brother the former secretary of Gazipur municipality Chhatra League Mohammed Ali Hossain and eight to 10 other unnamed persons.

OC Khandaker Rezaul Hasan Reza of Joydebpur police station said: “Shahjahan was arrested from his residence at around 11:30 pm on Wednesday.”

According to the case statement, properties worth about Tk1 lakh was damaged during the clash.
