Update : 11 May 2015, 05:02 PM

An army soldier who tortured his wife after tying her to a tree in Lohagara of Narail has been arrested from Jalalabad Cantonment in Sylhet.

A team of Narail police in association with Shahparan police station arrested Shafiqul Islam around 6:35pm on Monday.

Officer-in-Charge Shakhawat Hossain of Shahparan police confirmed to the Dhaka Tribune about the arrest.

On Sunday, the High Court directed the police to arrest the soldier, his parents and accomplices for torturing his wife.

The court also directed the district administration and the police to provide treatment and security to the victim.

The accused, Shafiqul Sheikh, along with some family members, allegedly tied up his wife Bobita Khanam to a tree trunk and beat her on suspicion of stealing in Salbarad village on April 30.

At one point of the torture, Bobita fell unconscious, and her husband locked her up inside a shop in a village market nearby.  The police rescued Bobita after they were notified. She is now being treated at Narail Sadar Hospital.

Bobita’s mother filed a case with Lohagara police station under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, while the police arrested two people on May 5.

The court also issued a ruling asking the government why legal action should not be taken against the accused.
