Update : 11 May 2015, 12:41 PM

An accused in a case, filed in connection with drug peddling with Boalkhali police station, has died in police custody on Monday, five day after he was arrested.

The deceased, Imam Hossain, 42, of Boalkhali upazila in Chittagong, fell sick on Thursday on his way to a district court, said OC Shamsul Islam of Boalkhali police station.

“Acting on a tip-off, the police arrested him on Wednesday and he fell sick on Thursday on his way to the court. He was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where he died on Monday afternoon, while undergoing treatment.”

“Doctors said he died from drinking too much liquor.”

The body was sent to the CMCH morgue for autopsy while an unnatural death case was lodged with Panchlaish police station.

The person had been arrested six months back on the same charge, added the OC.

Abdul Mannan Monaf, UP chairman of Sakpura union under Boalkhali upazila, told Dhaka Tribune that Imam was a professional drug seller.

“He used to sell and take toxic liquor at his shop in the area.”

Locals, however, alleged that Imam died due to police torture.
