Egg dealer fights back against police

Update : 18 Nov 2016, 11:24 PM
Describing this violation of law by law enforcers, Abdul Bashir told the media at Shahbagh police station: “Two on-duty police constables intercepted my three-wheeler van at Karwan Bazar intersection at 5:45am when I was returning to Karwanbazar, like other days, delivering eggs at Lalbagh in Old Dhaka. They accused me of being a marijuana dealer and having drugs in my pocket.” It should be mentioned that the law enforcers were in uniform when they stopped the wholesaler’s van and were on a motorbike with the word ‘police’ written on its number plate. “I thought they wanted to search my pocket and the empty cases of eggs. So, I brought out my keys and money, amounting to Tk 44,000, from my pocket. No sooner had I brought the money out of my pocket, they snatched it from my hand and tried to flee,” Bashir added. But the egg trader succeeded catching one of the muggers red-handed. Grabbing constable Latif tightly, he shouted, “Robber, robber.” “Seeing police uniform, people at first were reluctant to come forward. But later, a police petrol team came and informed the Shahabagh police station.” The constables were identified as Latifuzzaman and Rajekul of Dhaka Metropolitan Traffic Police (North) while the egg dealer was identified as Abdul Bashir, said police sources. Latif was caught red handed by the wholesaler himself while trying to flee the scene riding on a motorcycle after mugging an egg dealer. The two police constables of Dhaka Metropolitan Traffic Division (North) were suspended yesterday on charges of mugging a wholesale egg dealer. Constable Rajekul who was in Ansar uniform managed to flee the scene. Bashir alleged that although one of the mugger police was caught on spot, he did not get back his money. Confirming the news, Shahbagh police station officer in-charge Abu Bakkar Siddique told the Dhaka Tribune that a three-member probe committee had been formed to investigate the allegation. Maruf Hasan Sarder, deputy commissioner of Ramna division of DMP, told the Dhaka Tribune that the duo law enforcers had been held by police and a case was filed with Shahbagh police station in this regard. “Stern actions will be taken against them after investigation. We already have seized the motorbike and are trying to recover the hijacked money,” he added.
