A local leader of Jubo Dal, the youth wing of the BNP, was stabbed to death at Sabujnagar area of Joypurhat Sadar on Sunday morning.
The deceased was identified as Afzal Hossain Loro, 46, joint general secretary of Joypurhat Jubo Dal and a member of district BNP.
The Detective Branch (DB) arrested one person, Mohan from Amtali area, later in the afternoon.
Police and locals said Mohan and his associate Shanto stabbed Afzal Hossain in the chest and fled the scene immediately.
The neighbours rushed critically injured Afzal to Joypurhat Hospital where he died around 11am while undergoing treatment.
Acting on a tip off, a team of district DB police led by Sub-Inspector Qayyum Ali chased and arrested Mohan from the Muslimnagar area.
Mohan told reporters that he stabbed Afzal Hossain as the latter scolded him.
Police said Mohan, son of Shahjahan Mia, was on bail in another murder case.
Officer in-Charge of Sadar police station, Anwarul Islam, said Afzal's family was preparing to file a case in this regard.
