4 policemen, journalist jailed for extortion, mugging

The five defendants were found guilty on Wednesday of extortion and mugging over the September 17, 2015 incident, when they identifyied themselves as policemen and snatched gold ornaments worth Tk2.20 lakh, two mobile phones and one private car from Saiful Islam Bhuiyan on the airport premises in Dhaka. Dhaka District and Sessions' Judge SM Kuddus Jaman handed down the guilty verdicts on Wednesday. The convicts are Assistant Sub-Inspectors M Aminul Islam Rana and M Shah Alam, constables Raja Babu Raj and M Ashiqul Islam Ashiq, and Pavel Mahmud alias Tareq Mahmud, a journalist of Saptahik Motprokash. The court also fined them Tk10,000 each and in case of default, they will have to suffer an additional two months in jail. The court acquitted M Nazmul Hasan Mamun of the charge brought against him in the case. Following the incident, Saiful filed the case with the airport police station. Later, police recovered the private car from Kosaibari in the Khilkhet area of the city. On December 23, Airport police station Sub-Inspector and also the investigation officer Ali Akbar submitted its charge sheet.
