Tahsif Sauri murder: Friend Shahriar Dip placed on 4-day remand

Police sought 7 days of remand to investigate Dip’s suspected involvement in the murder and identify others involved

A Dhaka court on Saturday placed Ahmed Shahriar Reza Dip, described as a younger friend of former Air Force official Tahsif Sauri, on a 4-day remand in a murder case filed over the recovery of Sauri’s body.

The order was passed by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas following an application submitted by the investigation officer, Inspector Firoz Uddin of the Tongi River Police Outpost.

Prosecution Department Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam confirmed the remand.

Inspector Firoz Uddin produced Dip before the court and sought a 7-day remand.

According to the remand application, preliminary investigations had found evidence suggesting Dip's involvement in the murder. The investigation is ongoing, and keeping him in custody until its completion is essential, the application stated.

The investigation officer sought remand on 5 grounds, including the possibility that Dip could flee if released on bail and hamper the investigation, the need to uncover the main mystery behind the case, and the need to arrest others involved in the murder.

Dip was produced before the court at around 2:15pm and kept in the detention room of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court in Dhaka. He was brought to the courtroom at around 3:25pm for the hearing.

State-appointed advocate Azizul Haque Didar argued in favor of the remand, while Monirul Islam and Mutasim Billah, representing Dip, sought its cancellation.

After hearing both sides, the court ordered a 4-day remand.

Earlier, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) had taken Dip into custody for questioning from his residence in Mohammadpur on Thursday night.

As no case had been filed even after 3 days, discussions were underway about what decision would be taken regarding him. Amid this, he was handed over to the River Police on Friday night.

After Tahsif's father filed a case on Friday night, Dip was shown arrested.

Tahsif Sauri, who had been in the spotlight as the person who recorded the video of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina leaving the country, was found dead floating in the water.

River Police recovered his body from the Rajabari Ghat area of the Turag River on Wednesday afternoon.

He came downstairs at Dip's call on Tuesday evening and left home on his motorcycle.

Dip had said on Thursday that they had dinner together at a restaurant before he parted ways with Tahsif in the Uttara House Building area.

That night, the PBI took Dip into custody for questioning from his residence on Babar Road in Mohammadpur.

Based on information provided by him, Tahsif's motorcycle was recovered from the Mazar slum area of Tongi on Friday morning.

Dip also admitted to going with Tahsif to the area, which is known as a drug spot, around midnight. At one point, PBI officials also visited the area in Tongi with him on Friday.
