Police have arrested another accused in the murder case involving student Azmul, bringing the total number of arrests to three.
The arrestee was identified as Pratap Sarkar, 28, son of Shibpada Sarkar of Dhulgram Siddhipasha village in Abhaynagar upazila of Jessore.
A joint team of Harintana Police and the Detective Branch (DB) of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) arrested him from Ujirpur in Barisal on Tuesday afternoon, KMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (DB) Lipon confirmed.
Meanwhile, another accused, Rifat, was produced before a court on Tuesday afternoon, where he gave a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.
Harintana Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Hossain said Rifat expressed his willingness to make the statement, after which the court recorded it and sent him to jail.
He said a joint team of police and DB was conducting an operation in Barisal based on intelligence information and had made further progress in the case.
Another accused, Rubel, who was detained by the SRB, has been handed over to police and may be produced before a court on September 23.
Azmul was allegedly beaten on the roof of a four-storey building on Islamnagar Road adjacent to the hall road of Khulna University late Friday night over an allegation of stealing cooked rice. His family members have alleged that he was beaten to death.
Azmul’s father, Kutubuddin, filed the murder case with Harintana Police Station on Saturday night, naming four Khulna University students and 20-25 unidentified people as accused.
