A police assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Pallabi Police Station and another man were sent to jail on August 24, a day after they were arrested with 5,310 yaba pills in Uttara, Dhaka.
The accused are Md Shafiqul Islam, 43, an ASI at Pallabi Police Station, and Wasim, 24.
Pallabi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hasan Basir said the two were sent to jail on August 24. ‘We have no information about the other three people,’ he said.
The two were arrested during separate raids conducted by Dakshinkhan police in different areas of Uttara on Sunday night, following information about a yaba trafficking network.
Sub-Inspector Bakhtiar Hossain of Dakshinkhan Police Station said police first raided an area near Azampur Kacha Bazar, where Wasim allegedly tried to flee but was caught. Police recovered 50 yaba pills from him.
Acting on information obtained from Wasim, police later raided a rented house and arrested ASI Shafiqul, recovering another 200 yaba pills from his possession.
Police subsequently raided a flat at Noor Building on House No 67 in Bismillah Polli, near Azampur Kacha Bazar, and recovered another 5,060 yaba pills.
In total, police seized 5,310 yaba pills from the three locations.
According to the case statement, the two suspects told police during preliminary questioning that they collected yaba from different parts of the country and sold the drugs in Dakshinkhan and surrounding areas.
Sub-Inspector Shahinur Rahman, also the case’s investigating officer, said a case was filed with Dakshinkhan Police Station on August 24 under the Narcotics Control Act. The case names the two arrested men and two to three unidentified individuals as accused.
The two suspects were later produced before a court, which ordered them to be sent to jail.
Md Emdadul Haque, inspector (investigation) of Pallabi Police Station, said he was aware of Shafiqul’s arrest. He said Shafiqul joined the station on June 8 but had frequently neglected his duties, often citing illness and other excuses.
